An example of a Twisted (changed) Tale

Dear all,

As mentioned in class, a twisted tale is simply a tale whose ending has been altered / changed / modified / twisted.

Please do not be confused with the term twisted mind which means a wicked mindset. We are not writing about a wicked tale. NO. WE ARE NOT.

'Twisted' here represents the past tense of the verb 'twist' ; which means to twist (verb).

And click on the links below to read the story as shared in class as well as the twist on the ending done.

A dangerous encounter with a cat

A dangerous encounter with a cat
by Benny Ng

I almost lost my life. I just managed to scrap
off being sent to the gallows by a most deceiving cat.
The experience was harrowing. Yet, somehow,
I survived this horror story. Just recalling the events
that happened, I shudder upon the recollection
of such unpleasantness, Even if being pierced by a
knife to my rib cage, it would only seem like a
fraction of the trauma (pain or terror is also fine)
I had been through.

I recall it was mid week, a Wednesday
morning when this incident took place. I was busy
with my usual routine - having to go to the wet
market across my block to buy some groceries.
And no surprises, I took my usual route to the
market. However, on my way there that particular
Wednesday morning, I spotted a black cat rampaging
through the garbage from afar. The cat was making
loud growls and tossing all the garbage messily
on the floor around the bin. It was as if the cat was
looking for something. Something. But a cat?
And with such urgency? I felt something was
amiss. I felt like the cat was trouble. Something
at the back of my mind just kept telling me that.
Therefore, although filled with curiosity, I
forced myself to stop probing into the cat's
business and walked away. I even changed my
route to the market just so to avoid the cat.
As the saying goes, it is better to stay out of
harm's way.

... ... ... ... ...
Rest of the story shall be revealed later.

The life of a cupcake

Dear all,

This is the modified version of the poem, 'Life of a cupcake'.

They put me in the oven to bake.
Me, a deprived and miserable cake.
Feeling the heat, I started to bubble.
Watching others, I knew I was in trouble.

They opened the door and I started my life.
Frosting me with a silver knife,
decorating me with candy jewels,
the rest of my batch looked like fools.

Lifting me up, she took off my wrapper.
Feeling the breeze, I shivered.
Opening her mouth with shiny teeth inside,
this was the day I was enjoyed so deliciously!

Yummy!

Please find the original version of this poem below.

Also note that a preposition of location is also known as a preposition of place.

A point to take note of, some prepositions could be belong to more than one category.
For example, from:

  • From time to time, we will see exceptions. (from is a preposition of time in this case)
  • I am unable to distinguish the two twin sisters from each other (from is a preposition of place/location in this case)

Tongue Twisters - Are you game enough for it? ^.^

Bitty Batter bought some butter.
"But," said she, "this butter's bitter.
If I put it in my batter,
it will make my batter bitter."
So she bought some better butter,
and she put the better butter in the bitter batter,
and made the bitter batter better.

Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.
A peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked.
If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers,
how many pickled peppers did Peter Piper pick?

Lovely Metaphors by Sarah Jane

The following is an extract taken from Sarah Jane's original poem, 'Lovely Metaphors', found at

Lovely Metaphors by Sarah Jane (full version)

Blue eyes like diamond
I've never been so lost
Water rises round my feet
I want to drown in your love

Smile like sapphire
Sparkling to my soul
I may be poor but with you
I'll always be rich in bliss

Words like apple pie
Perfect recipe for the best result
Chunks of sweetness all around
Marry you? My soul I'll consult.

The Research Questions for unit 8

The research questions:

Group 1: How does laughter happen?

Laughter happens when we hear a funny joke, see a funny sight, recall a memory of something funny, witness some slapstick comedy like a clown slipping on a banana, or we might also laugh at something that is not funny.

Group 1: How long is the effect of the laughing gas on a person?

The duration of the laughing gas on a person is about 25 to 30 minutes.

Group 1 work done by Felicia, Putri, Adibah, Ethan and Luis.

Group 2: How long is the effect of the laughing gas on a person?

The effect will last for about 5 minutes.

Group 2 work done by Keng Yu, Xin Yao and friends.

Group 3: How much energy does one expand while laughing?

  • 10 to 15 minutes of laughter every day can increase energy expenditure by 10 to 40 calories per day; which is the same as 2 kg a year.
  • Laughing increases the heart rate by 10 to 20 percent.
  • It is believed that laughing can burn calories.
  • Laughing for 15 minutes can burn off 2 Hershey's kisses.
  • Laughing for an hour could burn off a chocolate bar

Group 3 work done by Chloe, Faez, Othman, Akif, Zi Qi and Erica

Group 4: What bodily changes are taking place when we laugh?

  • A big muscle above your stomach moves up and down your diaphgram.

The reason is when a person laughs, it sends the message to someone's brain and causes one to laugh as well.

See the article posted earlier on 'Why laughing is contagious?'

Why is Laughter Contagious?

After inhaling laughing gas (nitrous oxide)

Watch this video to see what happens to a person after inhaling laughing gas, which is also known as nitrous oxide. Some food for thought:

  • Are the people in the video happy after laughing for so long?
  • Are the people in the video experiencing some kind of bodily cramps or muscles cramps?
  • Notice the amount of laughing gas they inhaled.

A safety pointer to note - do not inhale laughing gas.
