The Research Questions for unit 8

The research questions:

Group 1: How does laughter happen?

Laughter happens when we hear a funny joke, see a funny sight, recall a memory of something funny, witness some slapstick comedy like a clown slipping on a banana, or we might also laugh at something that is not funny.

Group 1: How long is the effect of the laughing gas on a person?

The duration of the laughing gas on a person is about 25 to 30 minutes.

Group 2: How long is the effect of the laughing gas on a person?

The effect will last for about 5 minutes.

Group 3: How much energy does one expand while laughing?


  • 10 to 15 minutes of laughter every day can increase energy expenditure by 10 to 40 calories per day; which is the same as 2 kg a year.
  • Laughing increases the heart rate by 10 to 20 percent.
  • It is believed that laughing can burn calories.
  • Laughing for 15 minutes can burn off 2 Hershey's kisses.
  • Laughing for an hour could burn off a chocolate bar

Group 4: What bodily changes are taking place when we laugh?


  • A big muscle above your stomach moves up and down your diaphgram.
  • Your heart will pump twice as hard.
  • Your vocal cords will vibrate.
  • You might cry,

Group 5: Why do we sometimes cry when we laugh?


Group 6: Why is laughing contagious?

The reason is when a person laughs, it sends the message to someone's brain and causes one to laugh as well.
